Recent floods in northeast Nigeria have displaced at least 50,000 people from their homes since last week. Across the Sahel and Lake Chad region, heavy floods have exacerbated existing humanitarian crises in countries such as Cameroon, Mali, and Niger. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is urgently calling for increased international support to provide relief to the most vulnerable.

More than half a million people have crossed into Eastern Chad in only six months, fleeing widespread violence in Darfur. Among this population, over half of the refugees from Sudan are school-aged children.

As leaders of the G7 countries met with representatives of the G5 Sahel countries yesterday in Biarritz, Norwegian Refugee Council and Action Against Hunger are deeply concerned by the lack of strong measures to address the crisis in the Sahel region.
