Humanitarian overview

Myanmar has seen escalating levels of violence and displacement since the military takeover in February 2021. The internal armed conflict has severely limited people’s access to livelihoods and essential services, and increased their vulnerability.

According the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, over 18.6 million people in Myanmar need humanitarian assistance and protection, and over 3.1 million people are displaced. Amid rising tension and hostilities, it’s increasingly difficult for people to access vital services – and for humanitarian organisations to reach those in need of help.

Our response

We’re working with our partners in the following areas:

  • Shelter and settlements – repairing and constructing shelters, ensuring families have essential household items, helping with small-scale water and sanitation projects, and improving community infrastructure.

  • Education providing protection and psychosocial support for conflict-affected children, helping them enrol in local schools and non-formal education programmes, and training young people in vital vocational skills.

  • Protection – providing protection services to people in and out of displacement camps, helping communities cope by improving information-sharing and communication, and informing policy towards ending displacement.
