Désiré had been working for NRC in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 2014 and was the emergency programme assistant at NRC’s office in Goma as well as the NRC staff representative.

He was attacked in his home on March 17th and succumbed to a gunshot wound a few hours after being rushed to the hospital. He leaves behind his wife and four children.

“We are utterly devastated to receive the news of the loss of our colleague, who was working tirelessly to support people affected by the recurring conflicts in eastern DR Congo. He was known for his rigor and strong commitment to work, not to mention his contagious positive energy. Our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues in this difficult time,” said NRC Secretary General Jan Egeland.

“We stand in solidarity with the millions of civilians in DR Congo who are paying a heavy price for the ongoing conflicts. Urban violence, extortion, kidnappings, and violent clashes continue to disrupt daily life, with insecurity forcing families to flee their homes.”
