Gaza: We have no time to lose

Palestinians in Gaza lack shelter, warm clothes, food and clean water. The first of our aid trucks arrived in Gaza five days after the ceasefire began, and we have dozens more truckloads preparing to enter.

Our trucks are loaded with life-saving supplies, including tents, bedding, cooking equipment, hygiene items, winter clothing, plastic sheeting and tarpaulins to repair damaged homes and reinforce people’s temporary shelters.

Every second counts.

The 15 months of the escalation in Gaza – with its ongoing hostilities, Israeli restrictions on access and movement, and deterioration of law and order – made it incredibly difficult for the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and other aid organisations to reach Palestinians with desperately needed humanitarian assistance. Nevertheless, our colleagues in Gaza have provided life-saving assistance to more than 450,000 people since 7 October 2023.

With the ceasefire, we have an opportunity to scale up our efforts. At the crossings, convoys of trucks still queue – but a surge of desperately needed aid has already entered. According to the ceasefire agreement, a minimum of 600 trucks will be allowed in every day to deliver humanitarian aid.

Where is NRC working in Gaza?

Gaza is divided into five administrative regions called governorates: North Gaza, Gaza, Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah. Since the onset of hostilities, NRC staff have supported vulnerable population groups in all five governorates.

Our main office is in Deir al-Balah, from which we are supporting Palestinians in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah governorates, and we are re-opening our office in Gaza City in order to expand our response in Gaza and North Gaza governorates.

Since the start of the ceasefire, hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have returned to their homes or the rubble where their homes once stood. Israeli bombardments and restrictions largely prevented aid agencies from accessing these areas, so the needs there are extremely high.

Here's what we're doing

Since October 2023, we've been providing vital aid to Palestinians in Gaza, and now, with improved operating conditions we’re stepping up our efforts.

But in order to expand, we need additional funding.

We have 229 truckloads of emergency aid worth USD 6 million that have already begun to enter Gaza.

With this emergency aid, we can support over 390,000 people by:

  • distributing essential household items, sanitation and hygiene kits, and educational materials
  • expanding our clean water trucking to reach 280,000 people, up from the current figure of 120,000
  • supplying people with tents and other shelter materials
  • providing cash assistance
  • increasing solid waste management coverage to 80 sites
  • continuing to provide legal assistance and protection, including individual support and counselling

The people in the Gaza need immediate help.

We are now asking for your support.
